Chitika Update

Some interesting news coming out of the Chitika blog: during this month, Chitika are to introduce geo-targetting for the U.K., so that U.K. merchants will be shown in the ads, and presumably prices shown will appear in Pounds Sterling, rather than Dollars as they do at the moment.

I think this has been one of the major drawbacks of Chitika for publishers like myself with U.K. based traffic, so it is good to see this improvement. Whether or not there are plans to introduce similar geo-targetting for other countries remains to be seen, although I guess that if the markets are big enough then eventually they will come.

My experience with Chitika over the past 2 weeks that I’ve used it on my site has been far from spectacular (indeed, I’ve had nothing like the CTR and earnings that others have reported), and I suspect that the currency and merchants shown have been a major factor in this disappointment. Let’s hope that geo-targetting helps this pick up a bit, and that they start to earn me a bit more money before I start to fall back on good old AdSense.

Unfortunately, Chitika have also announced a change to the way their ad units appear, with links being removed from the ad titles (in order to reduce the number of ‘curiosity clicks’ that advertisers appear to be having). This is likely to cause a significant drop in the click-through rate for publishers, and so I may have to put off retirement for a few more years yet.
