AdSense Referral Scheme
There’s probably not much left to say about the AdSense referral scheme that hasn’t been said by the multitude of posts that have already appeared (why do I always seem to be away when these big announcements are made?!), but I thought I might just add my 2p to the conversation with a couple of observations and thoughts.
Firstly, it looks as if this might be some sort of reaction from Google to the positive buzz that Chitika eMinimalls have been getting of the last few weeks. In particular, the Chitika referral scheme, which promises to pay users 10% of their referrers earnings for the first year, has been getting some good press as it would seem to be a generous offer. Unfortunately, the AdSense scheme will pay ‘only’ $100 as a one-off, and only once $100 has been reached by the new AdSense user. I guess a similar 10% offer from Google would have been too much to ask, but definitely would have been nice.
It’s unlikely that this referral scheme will make anyone a lot of money, although it could prove to be a useful little addition to web developers who refer their clients to the scheme. The Chitika scheme, on the other hand, could prove to be a nice little earner for those who refer the right sites.
There’s been some speculation, largely down to some of the wording that has been added with the referral scheme, that Google could be looking to get into the general affiliate marketing arena, currently occupied by the likes of Tradedoubler and Commission Junction. As with most things, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Google could get into this, as it clearly has the resources as well as a large webmaster user base that would no doubt be interested in its proposition.
