Google To Broker Print Ads?
CNet is reporting that Google may be about to start selling print ads to it’s AdWords clients.
Although this might sound a little distant from it’s core online business, it makes a lot of sense. I’ve thought for a while that there is room for a sort of “eBay for advertising”, where you can bid for ad space in magazines / newpapers etc. that you know are targetted towards your product or demographic. This idea is hardly revolutionary (see BlankSpace, for example), but has yet to really take off.
Google has the money, expertise and audience to create such a system - with AdWords and AdSense we have seen them match web publishers to web advertisers, it wouldn’t be that difficult for them to start offering this for offline advertisers too.
Given the information that Google has about your business and the products you offer (by looking at the keywords that you are targetting), they could then start to offer you relevant print ads themselves if they’ve bought up the ad inventory, or offer them directly to the publisher.
