Google Search For Multimap Gives Dodgy Results

I’ve just come across something that highlights the ways in which certain search results can be manipulated / hijacked in Google (and probably other search engines).

When doing a search for “multimap” on Google (with UK & Ireland results selected), the very first listing that appears is for the domain name “multimpa.co.uk” (notice the mispelling), and the page it points to purely consists of 1 Google AdSense ad and a hit counter (the domain of the page it points to is actually “chamonix-lodge.com”). The proper Multimap site comes second in the list.

I know this sort of thing happens now and again, but this seems incredible because there’s absolutely no content of use on the 1st listing (the title of the page itself is “StreetMap - StreetMap.com Multimap Multimap.com Map of UK UK Mapps Mapping”, and this text is also included in a white-on-white paragraph within the body of the page - pure spam! I wonder how many clicks they get on their AdSense ad?

I find this sort of thing intruiging, in that I’d love to know how they’ve managed to get there with so little content, but at the same time it’s frustrating to think that this could apparently happen so easily.

On a slightly related note, I often end up mis-typing it as “mulitmap.co.uk” when accessing their proper site, and have long considered registering that domain and putting together a site dedicated to the wonderful mullet haircut. The domain might trap a few clicks.
