Simple Explanation of New Google Patents

There’s been a lot of mentions in the search engine world about a recent Google patent, but up until now I haven’t come across anything that I could make any sense of to know what it would mean for webmasters. Luckily, SEO-Chat have written an article that explains it in simple terms, and I think I have now begun to understand it.

Although it is still just speculation, the article argues that rather than just looking at the number and quality of links to determine ranking (amongst other things, such as “freshness” of content), Google will be looking at the way these links are used by users, and will be using data collected from the Google Toolbar (you see, it’s sitting their at the browser looking innocent, whilst all the time it’s spying on your browsing habits) to show user behaviour on sites, such as links clicked and time spent.

This would seem like a perfectly good way of helping rank sites, although it is very much dependent on being able to get valuable date from web users. The much derided Google Web Accelerator was probably one source of this information, and the possibility of a “Google browser” would be even more likely if they knew they could collect the information without overly concerning users about the invasion of their privacy.
