The Difficulties of Web 2.0 Measurement

There’s an interesting interview over at e-Consultancy with Eric T. Peterson, a veteran of web analytics and author of several books on the subject.

The interview looks at the challenges of measuring Web 2.0 - which tend to fall into 2 categories:

  1. What is happening to your content offline, or outside of your control (e.g. RSS feeds).
  2. The use of AJAX affecting the number of page views your visitors make.

Web 2.0 is certainly making stat analysis more difficult, and it will be interesting seeing Google Analytics and the like come up with new ways of measuring these stats.

My first thought is that rather than page views, could the stats be based on time spent on a site? It might be more a more difficult metric to measure, but it could be worth considering.

For example, advertisers could be sold ad space by the “viewing hours”.

What are your thoughts?
