Searcher Behaviour

It’s worth reading Searcher Behaviour Research Update over at SearchEngineWatch for analysis of two new pieces of research into the way people use search engines.

In the first piece of research, IProspect found that 62% of search engine users click on a search result within the first page of results, and a full 90% of users click on a result within the first three pages of search results.

This emphasises the importance of appearing in the first three pages of the engines, and of course this holds for both natural and payed listings.

The study also found that 36% of searchers believe that companies whose websites are returned at the top of the search results are the top companies in their field.

In the second study featured by SearchEngineWatch, a U.K. perspective of search behaviour was researched by Harvest Digital. Their findings were that although Google was unsurprisingly the most used search engine, only 24% said they used just one search engine. 20% said they regularly used four or more search engines.

This is put down to the mistrust of the results they receive - just 22% of users reported that they were confident that search engines would always give them the information that they needed
